And chalk up another win for speech codes

Oklahoma Assistant Head Coach Cale Gundy has been canceled, oddly enough by himself. And, sadly, his coach should have told him no, I will NOT accept your resignation. But, gutless is the new word in America. Everyone it seems is now a misspeak or slip of the tongue from having their job, maybe even career come to an end. Is that a place anyone really wants to live in? To be entirely clear, here is what happened

The Oklahoma Sooners assistant head coach and receivers coach announced late Sunday night that he was resigning from the program because of a word he said during a film session.

“Last week, during a film session, I instructed my players to take notes. I noticed a player was distracted and picked up his iPad and read aloud the words that were written on his screen. The words displayed had nothing to do with football. One particular word that I should never – under any circumstances – have uttered was displayed on that screen. In the moment, I did not even realize what I was reading and, as soon as I did, I was horrified,” Gundy said when explaining his resignation.

He further added, “I want to be very clear: the words I read aloud from that screen were not my words. What I said was not malicious; it wasn’t even intentional. Still, I am mature enough to know that the word I said was shameful and hurtful, no matter my intentions. The unfortunate reality is that someone in my position can cause harm without ever meaning to do so.”

So, there you are. That is ending a career? That? Again, we are willing to live in a society where a mistake, an innocent misspeak can cause a person’s job, and indeed life’s work to be gone? I have to ask how such a hyper-sensitive atmosphere can benefit anyone? And, again, what of the student athlete who had that word, whatever it was on his iPad? Should he lose his scholarship? Be booted from the team? Or does the sensitivity overload only apply to certain people? I mean if a word has been given so much power, so much so we can not even know for certain what the word was, apparently everyone is trembling over a word. The whole country is fearful of their life being ruined over a word? Even if spoken accidentally. I would say God help us, but really, why should God bother to help such fools who allow foolish, angry people to dictate what words we may say, or write.

For those of you who might ask why I have not condemned the word that was likely used, this note. I did not use the word, and to be honest, the word is not the important thing here. The overt and idiotic response to the word is. Have we all gone so far over the edge of reality that we must give some contrived, scripted apology or “clarification” when writing about the power a word has been given? Is it that bad? Is it now true that you cannot even discuss a word, without some trepidation of losing your job? If so, we are truly lost. I will not be a part of such idiocy.
