Deadspin is (was?) the media company that attacked a young, Native-American Kansas City Chiefs fan for having his face painted black and red. Of course the photo they used only showed black. G/O Media sells Deadspin, lays off entire editorial staff with barely any notice
Sports blogging site Deadspin was sold to a European publisher and the entire staff was reportedly fired with barely any notice Monday — just months after the publication was forced to apologize for accusing a young Kansas City Chiefs fan of wearing “blackface.”
Jim Spanfeller, the CEO of parent G/O Media, broke the news of the sale and the layoffs in a memo to staff as the media company sold off another site in its crumbling empire.
Having been laid off, and having worked for companies that were always on the verge of going out of business, I don’t usually dance in the misery of others, but this company went out of its way to try to smear a young boy with an accusation that would have followed him for his whole life. A youngster whose only crime was being a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. When they were called on it, when the black paint that they showed was shown to be black and red paint, they went after him for wearing a headdress. That was before they found out that he was, in fact, of Native-American heritage. Even then, they didn’t apologize until lawyers were retained for a defamation suit.
