A large group of Democratic lawmakers have called out new House Speaker Mike Johnson’s remarks in the wake of the Maine mass shooting in which he placed blame on people, not firearms, for the country’s gun violence epidemic.
More than 100 Democrats — led by House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Chair Rep Mike Thompson — signed a letter to Mr Johnson, expressing their “deep concerns about your troubling comments following the devastating mass shooting” in Lewiston, Maine.
The shooting, which was the deadliest of 2023, claimed 18 lives and left 13 others wounded.
“At the end of the day, the problem is the human heart. It’s not guns. It’s not the weapons,” Mr Johnson said after the violence and then advocated for the Second Amendment in the next breath.
Democrats slammed this perspective, calling it “factually wrong” and said it “paints a dark view of America and its people.” The lawmakers argued, “Gun violence in America is not inevitable, it is simply tolerated by Republican leadership,” and called for the passage of gun legislation as an actionable way to prevent these attacks.

Scientists from Durham University in the UK came up with the novel approach to cutting meat consumption which, alongside dairy, accounts for about one-seventh of global emissions. …
The scientists took a group of 1,000 meat-eating adults and split them into four groups. The participants were then shown pictures of hot meals tagged with a climate, health or pandemic warning, or no label.
The participants found the climate warning labels to be the “most credible”. These labels showed fire-charred landscapes and read: “Warning: Eating meat contributes to climate change.”“As warning labels have already been shown to reduce smoking as well as drinking of sugary drinks and alcohol, using a warning label on meat-containing products could help us achieve this if introduced as national policy,” said Jack Hughes, the study’s lead author.

According to an official of Abbas’ Fatah party which runs the Palestinian Authority, “Blinken even demanded before he met with him that there be a condemnation” of the Hamas attacks. But no such condemnation was forthcoming. Nevertheless the media falsely reported that Abbas had disavowed Hamas. In reality, a statement was planted in a readout of a call with Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro without Abbas’ knowledge. When Abbas found out, he had it removed.
Abbas’s actual reaction to the Hamas murder of women and children was to assert the right of the “Palestinian people to defend themselves against the terrorism of settlers and the occupation forces”.

I will admit that I have never thought much of the intelligence of the members of the congressional ‘squad’ of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar and their fellow travelers. I’ve referred to them as the ‘squadristi’, the singular being ‘squadrista,’ which is what the Italians called Benito Mussolini’s ‘Black Shirts,’ because their policies call for fascistic control.
But Mrs Tlaib seems determined to prove that either she is an ignorant twit, or she believes the rest of us are.

Publicly, the Biden administration is pressuring Israel for pauses in the fighting. Privately it’s also warning that support is on the way out.
According to CNN, top Biden administration officials have been increasingly warning Israel that it will become more and more challenging to pursue Jerusalem’s goal of toppling Hamas in Gaza due to the international outcry, and that there is limited time to do so with full US support.

Columbia University Professor Rashid Khalidi gave a supposed history lesson about Israel’s 1948 War of Independence during which, he claimed, Jews ethnically cleansed Palestinian Arabs from their land. In reality, five Arab armies attacked Israel a few hours after its birth on May 15 1948, and then lost. Some of the Arabs who lived in the area that became Israel left of their own volition during the war, at the request of Arab leader that they “get out of the way” of the invading Arab armies. Israel did not allow them to return after the war, stating that they had not been loyal. Thus the “Palestinians” were born – between 472,000 and 650,000 people who found themselves stateless when the country they had refused to defend refused to let them back. Approximately 160,000 Arabs remained in Israel through the war and were granted full citizenship in the new state.
The Palestinians’ rich Arab “brothers” would not grant them citizenship in their countries and instead dumped them into often squalid refugee camps – for which they blamed Israel.
By contrast, nearly 1 million Jews were expelled or forced to flee from Arab and Muslim countries beginning in 1948, and they were welcomed into tiny, impoverished Israel and granted citizenship.
Arabs have since referred to a war that they started and lost as the nakba (catastrophe), and continue to blame Israel for not cooperating in its own elimination. Perhaps they should have thought of that before starting the war.

There was a time when the Tamimi clan was featured here frequently because they were promoted by the media, including the NY Times, for their ‘peaceful’ resistance to Israel in the town of Nabi Saleh. Their most aggressive promoter was Ithaca, NY, anti-Israel Activist Ariel Gold, formerly of the non-Jewish anti-Zionist Jewish Voice for Peace.
In reality, the clan was drenched in terrorism and blood. The mastermind of the Sbarro Massacre was a Tamimi clan member, Ahlam Tamimi, who has been indicted by the U.S. because Americans were killed in the bombing, but Jordan refuses extradition.
In the Progressive utopia championed by Woodrow Wilson and his successors, government will iron out the imperfections in human affairs through the use of regulatory agencies run by non-political experts. Such people, being experts and completely non-political, would pose no reason for concern about abuse of power, because of course they would never seek go outside their proper regulatory portfolio to use their authority to stamp out the freedoms and speech of their political opponents on important topics of the day.
In the real world government regulators since the creation of their agencies have inevitably used their powers to disadvantage and silence political opposition. The last few years have seen this phenomenon taken to new levels of blatancy and aggressiveness. In one of the most notable examples, the case of Missouri v. Biden, covered several times on this blog (for example here and here), has brought to light an entire “censorship industrial complex” of federal regulators during the Biden presidency pressuring social media companies to suppress the speech of those opposing official government narratives on topics including Covid-19 origins, lockdowns, vaccine efficacy and side effects, climate change, and much more. Missouri v. Biden (now under the name Murthy v. Missouri) is currently before the Supreme Court, which is considering whether to sustain an injunction against the government’s conduct issued by a district court in Louisiana and mostly affirmed by the Fifth Circuit.
Why has the Mummified Meat Puppet Administration halted American arms exports? Why now? Because they don’t want the Israeli government arming Israeli citizens against Hamas. They prefer they continue to be disarmed and vulnerable to terrorist atrocities. Israel is supposedly excepted, but this measure damages American gun and accessory manufacturers, short and long term, which makes it more difficult for Israelis and others to arm and equip themselves. Ohio State University has more than doubled its diversity staff in just five years, hiring more than 100 new DEI-related employees between 2018 and 2023, swelling the headcount from 88 to 189, a College Fix analysis found.
In 2018, Ohio State employed 88 diversity-related staffers at a cost of $7.3 million annually, according to research conducted at the time.
Today, Ohio State employs 189 diversity-related staffers costing Buckeye taxpayers $20.38 million per year, The Fix analysis found. The totals include OSU’s fringe benefits.
With that growth, the cost to fund OSU’s DEI staffers nearly tripled in the last five years, reflecting an increase of $13 million since 2018.
