The Other McCain

A Self-Inflicted Disaster as Republicans Vote to Oust Kevin McCarthy as Speaker

Perhaps some of my readers are not sad to see Kevin McCarthy voted out as Speaker of the House. And I’m here to tell you, you’re wrong.

Perhaps you recall the scene from Gone With the Wind in which Rhett is helping Scarlett and Melanie escape Atlanta before the Yankee invaders arrive. At one point, the road is blocked by a passing column of Confederate troops. Scarlett frets: “Oh, dear, I wish they’d hurry,” to which Rhett replies, “I wouldn’t be in such a hurry to see them go if I were you. With them goes the last semblance of law and order.”

So it is with ex-Speaker McCarthy. Some conservatives may have loathed McCarthy as a compromised, unprincipled sellout, and I have no interest in debating anyone about McCarthy’s faults. The problem is that, having created this vacancy, the GOP insurgents offer no candidate capable of filling the void. Critics may say that anyone would be better than McCarthy, but which “anyone” do they have in mind?

The College Fix

MSU College of Law concerned Spartan helmet may trigger assault victims

One way the Michigan State University College of Law can show a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is by removing the image of its Spartan mascot helmet from promotional materials, according to school leaders.

A memo between the American Bar Association and leaders of the law school states that is one way the admissions division “has demonstrated a commitment to DEI.”

The memo states in part: “More trauma-informed intentionality with respect to marketing materials and admissions events: removing the MSU helmet and providing sufficient physical space at events to be mindful of potential triggers for survivors of sexual assault.”

Will “Better” Defenders Cost Lives in Schools?

It is bad enough when another narcissistic idiot with a gun kills innocent victims. It is worse when the mainstream media gives the murderer a multi-million-dollar publicity campaign. That is crudely stated, but profoundly true. Until that media dynamic changes, we’re left to defend our children in school and defend our neighbors at church. Along the way, we’re balancing some conflicting emotions and some important truths about protecting our kids. Finding the best middle-ground is hard.

Let’s start with some facts. We defend our elites with guns. That is true for rich anti-gun billionaires like Mayor Michael Bloomberg. It is also true for elite DC politicians and their families. Ignore what the politicians say about guns and watch what they do. They think guns save their lives and the lives of those they love.

That is easy to say, but the emotions around public violence are still hard to deal with. Part of us feels that attacking a school or a church is unimaginable. Just because it is uncomfortable for us to consider doesn’t mean a narcissist won’t do it to grab our attention. Mass murderers deliberately attack innocent children to leave us outraged.

The Morning Briefing: Please Welcome to the Main Stage—YOUR Republican Dumpster Fire!

This is certainly fun, isn’t it?

I’ve seen a lot of internecine squabbles in the Republican party in my decades of activism, but that mess yesterday was really something different. The unceremonious end to Kevin McCarthy’s brief tenure as Speaker of the House offered almost nothing to like, unless you’re a fan of drama for drama’s sake.

It should be noted up front that I like everything about what the Freedom Caucus stands for. The members of it are singing my song. Unfortunately, I get the feeling that all they’re ever capable of doing is singing louder. At some point it becomes shrieking rather than singing, distorted well past the point of when the original meaning of the song can be conveyed.

I also don’t think that there are any good guys in this family feud.

This is making Warmists very excited, failing to realize that if the government forces this on the private sector it’ll mess with their own lives

Climate change is about to play a big role in government purchases – with vast implications for the US economy

Each year, the federal government purchases about 50,000 new vehicles. Until recently, almost all of them ran on diesel or gasoline, contributing to U.S. demand for fossil fuels and encouraging automakers to continue focusing on fossil-fueled vehicles.

That’s starting to change, and a new directive that the Biden Administration quietly issued in September 2023 will accelerate the shift.

The administration directed U.S. agencies to begin considering the social cost of greenhouse gases when making purchase decisions and implementing their budgets.

That one move has vast implications that go far beyond vehicles. It could affect decisions across the government on everything from agriculture grants to fossil fuel drilling on public lands to construction projects. Ultimately, it could shift demand enough to change what industries produce, not just for the government but for the entire country.

  1. Re: McCarthy. And that’s how we get RINOs. We accept people who can’t keep their word. Maybe this will school some Republicans that there will be a price for being a spineless sellout. In the long run, this should make Republicans better. if it doesn’t, we were lost anyway.
