  1. Propaganda. Just like the anti nuke crowd spews propaganda so too does the pro nuke side. MOST of the waste from reactors is U235…which is radioactive to some extent for BILLIONS of years. It can be sequestered to keep it’s threat minimalized. However there are other byproducts from reactors that are much more toxic than Uranium. Plutonium, radioactive Iodine, Cesium and many other isotopes are also created by reactors. These products are why both Fukushima and Chernobyl are surrounded by large “no go” zones. In the roughly 75 years reactors have been around we have seen 3 serious accidents…that we know of.
That means on average every 25 years a reactor has suffered a major failure of some kind. NOT a particularly good track record for something so dangerous.
In theory nuclear power can be a safe abundant resource. In reality these plants are designed, operated and maintained by ERROR PRONE HUMANS. And generally they are built by the LOWEST BIDDER. Which means the cheapest materials possible and the most construction short cuts that can be gotten away with.
Then they are run by people….some of whom are intelligent and attentive and others who will chicken walk through their work shift at the reactor plant. Sorry.
But it’s simply not possible to insure 100% safety with nuclear power. I wish it was but reality says other wise. And with the growing “competency crisis” things
    are not going to improve.
