Words Matter – Leftist Excuses for Criminality
This has been a pet peeve of mine for a very long time. The Ontological Error of ‘Gun Violence’
I wanted to title this post “Leftist Obfuscation of Criminality,” but I resisted. (“Eschew obfuscation!” That is not a motto of mine, but it should be.)
The Left loves to talk in ways that hide the truth. Bring up the issue of crime, and they will start talking about “gun crime.” If suicide is mentioned, they will start talking about “gun deaths.” As if an inanimate object was responsible for the crime committed, or if guns were not available, people would be unable to commit suicide. Neither, of course, is true.

State of the Union: Drug overdoses killed more Army soldiers than combat in Afghanistan from 2015 to 2022.
The U.S. military “want[s] to understand white rage,” Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley told members of Congress in 2021. Maybe he should have been more concerned about white powder and other drugs’ impact on the lives of our men in uniform.
On Monday, the Washington Post reported that, in 2021, at least twenty-seven soldiers died from fentanyl overdoses—the highest overdose death toll in the Army’s history. It marks the continuation of a worrisome trend. From 2015 to 2022, a total of 127 soldiers from the Army died from fentanyl overdoses, according to Army records obtained by the Washington Post. That figure is more than twice the number of Army service members killed in combat in Afghanistan over the same interval of time.

Do We Still ‘Hold These Truths’?

In about three weeks, we will once again be celebrating the Fourth of July, America’s Independence Day. But what are we really celebrating? For all too many Americans, the Fourth of July is just another summer holiday, albeit one with fireworks. Of course, most Americans dimly recollect that it was on this day, sometime in the distant past, that Americans declared their independence from Great Britain. But they seldom stop to reflect on the true revolution that the Fourth of July signifies: the Declaration of Independence and the creation of a nation based on a universal idea. As Alexander Hamilton put it in the Federalist, the United States had the opportunity to establish a government founded on “reflection and choice” rather than on “accident and force.”

20 Armed IRS & ATF Agents Raid Gun Store & Take Customer’s Gun Purchase Records.
Twenty heavily armed federal agents pulled in behind Montana’s Highwood Creek Outfitters’ owner Tom Van Hoose as he arrived at his shop Wednesday morning, KRTV reported.
“We have a reputation of dotting all the i’s and crossing all the t’s because there’s so much legal fun to be had,” said Van Hoose. “It’s just not worth doing things that are going to get you in trouble.”
The IRS CID troops took ten hours to copy the information on his computers and download his point of sale software information. But what Van Hoose says really concerns him is the fact that in addition to his accounting and sales records, the agents confiscated 13 years of 4473 forms and copied his firearm acquisition and disposition book.
Anyone who’s ever completed a 4473 form knows there’s no revenue or financial data there. That form is a record of a firearm purchase transaction used to facilitate a NICS background check and potentially trace a gun’s ownership down the road if it’s used in a crime. Gun dealers are required to keep those forms for at least 20 years.
