What if the Skynryd air crash had not happened? Guitarist Ed King had left the band, and he was replaced by Steve Gaines. Gaines joined Allen Collins, and Gary Rossington, and he was a perfect fit. Three awesome lead guitarists. Put that with Ronnie van Zandt and his vocals, Billy Powell, who was the best keyboardist in rock, period, and Artimus Pyle on drums, Leon Wilkerson on bass. Lord the music they would have made! But, alas, the crash. But that version of Skynyrd left us a taste

  1. I still put “Freebird” as #1 rock song of all time.
    The guitar “solos” with three guitars in the live versions are the best in the world.
