Scientists Revive 48,500-Year-Old ‘Zombie Virus’ Buried in Ice

The thawing of ancient permafrost due to climate change may pose a new threat to humans, according to researchers who revived nearly two dozen viruses – including one frozen under a lake more than 48,500 years ago.

European researchers examined ancient samples collected from permafrost in the Siberia region of Russia. They revived and characterized 13 new pathogens, what they termed “zombie viruses,” and found that they remained infectious despite spending many millennia trapped in the frozen ground.

Scientists have long warned that the thawing of permafrost due to atmospheric warming will worsen climate change by freeing previously trapped greenhouse gases like methane. But its effect on dormant pathogens is less well understood.

The team of researchers from Russia, Germany and France said the biological risk of reanimating the viruses they studied was “totally negligible” due to the strains they targeted, mainly those capable of infecting amoeba microbes. The potential revival of a virus that could infect animals or humans is much more problematic, they said, warning that their work can be extrapolated to show the danger is real.

Ah, SO what other hellish things might climate change unleash upon us? Disco? Bell bottom jeans? Pet rocks? Bananarama? The Village People? Geraldo Rivera and an empty vault and two hours of our lives we cannot get back…..? DAMN CLIMATE CHANGE!!

Senator Murphy has am irrational and dangerous view of people buying or owning guns. He hates that liberty. He is even for defunding police in sanctuary cities. Appearing on CNN on Sunday, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) declared that he thinks Congress needs to punish those Second Amendment sanctuaries across the country that have declared their intent not to enforce any new federal gun control legislation, and in some cases any additional state-level gun control measures as well. Pointing to the fact that El Paso County, Colorado is one of those sanctuaries, Murphy argued that the designation somehow enabled the suspect in the Q nightclub shooting to carry out his attack.

Murphy condemned the actions of some Colorado counties that have declared their status as “Second Amendment sanctuaries” to CNN’s Dana Bash on Sunday, arguing they were circumventing state and federal laws. More than half of the state’s counties passed some form of the resolution after Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed a “red flag” law in 2019, which allowed police to temporarily take away the guns of those who may pose a risk to society. The law went into effect in 2020.

“The majority of counties in this country declare that they are not going to enforce state and federal gun laws, they have decided that they are going to essentially refuse to implement the laws that are on the books. That is a growing problem in this country,” he said. “I think we’re gonna have to have a conversation about that in the United States Senate. Do we want to continue to supply fundamental law enforcement in counties that refuse to implement state and federal gun laws?”

Be sure to go read it all. Sen Murphy is, again, a fanatic, his ideas are radical and dangerous. What a shame any such person could get elected anywhere.

The left simply cannot grasp that criminals do not obey laws

Memphis lawmakers want exemption from Constitutional Carry

Shelby County is a speck of blue in ruby-red Tennessee; one of just four counties to vote for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jason Martin, who managed to pull in 33% of the vote statewide, but won Shelby County 54.2% – 43.2% over incumbent Bill Lee. Memphis-area lawmakers know they have no chance of enacting any new gun control legislation in the Republican-dominated statehouse, but they’re hoping that the GOP will throw them a bone when the 2023 session gets underway by exempting the county from the state’s permitless carry law.

There’s no doubt that violent crime is a serious problem in Memphis. The city saw a record number of homicides last year, and this year the grim statistics have only marginally improved. Democrats argue that the state’s permitless carry law, which went into effect in 2021, has fueled the violence in cities like Memphis and Nashville, and say those cities and their surrounding county should be able to opt out of the law and require carry licenses.

Senator London Lamar, a democrat representing District 33 in Memphis, is getting ready to make a big ask of her fellow state lawmakers.

On Tuesday, Nov. 22, she filed Senate Bill 0010 which “requires a person to obtain an enhanced or concealed handgun permit to carry a handgun in certain counties,” and those counties are Davidson and Shelby.

“While I know it will be an uphill battle,” Senator Lamar told Action News 5, “right now, we are still dealing with crime in our city. We need to make sure we are holding folks accountable who shouldn’t have guns, and people who can have guns can get them through the appropriate permitting process.”

The stupid is so massive here. Constitutional, or permitless carry allows law-abiding citizens to carry firearms sans a permit. The bad actors are not carrying guns to commit crimes. They carried guns BEFORE the law was passed, an if Memphis were able to opt out, they would still carry illegal firearms. Criminals, looking to commit crimes are obviously not dissuaded by laws. Sounds like what Memphis needs is smarter city officials
