The Other McCain

Another Soros Funded Disaster

Almost 12000 cases dismissed due to failures of St. Louis Circuit attorney among new allegations from Missouri attorney general

When we talk about crime-riddled cities, Chicago, New York and Philadelphia get a lot more attention than St. Louis, but on a per-capita basis, crime is much worse in St. Louis, which regularly leads New Orleans and Baltimore as the most violent major city in America. Alas, so many people have fled St. Louis in recent decades that it almost doesn’t qualify as a “major” city now, with fewer than 300,000 residents. (Henderson, Nevada, Greensboro, North Carolina, and Irvine, California, are all bigger than St. Louis now.) Things have been going downhill in St. Louis for a long time, so it would be wrong to say that the 2016 election of Kim Gardner as Circuit Attorney for the city has caused the decline; rather, the scandal-ridden tenure of Gardner is symptomatic of the social decay in a city that has long since passed the point of no return. Only in a desolate urban nightmare could someone with such little aptitude for office have gotten elected, and it is impossible to pity the residents of St. Louis, as they have gotten exactly what they deserve for electing a prosecutor who ran on an anti-law-enforcement platform.

The College Fix

Students blocked Maoist China survivor from giving speech; she gave it off-campus instead

A Chinese immigrant who survived Mao’s Communist regime spoke off campus in Spokane, Washington, a few weeks after the Whitworth University student government rejected a proposal to bring her to the college, alleging her speech would be “harmful.”

The Associated Students of Whitworth University had voted 9 to 4 against hosting the speaker, Xi Van Fleet, at its April 12 meeting, Campus Reform reported.

With that, Van Fleet was forced to give the speech at a different venue.

“Last night I spoke off Whitworth campus on Marxist Cultural Revolutions,” Van Fleet tweeted Friday. “I want to express my deep appreciation for all those who attended the event including Whitworth Turning Point chapter members, professors, parents, & local residents.”

UNC Professors: Teaching The Constitution Violates Our “Academic Freedom”

Evidently a planned requirement to teach the Constitution is so triggering that 637 UNC (University of North Carolina) professors signed a letter in protest. Our “academic freedom” is at stake!

“It’s just absurd, it’s frankly absurd,” Jay Smith, a tenured Chapel Hill history professor, said of that bill. “It is a blatant violation of academic freedom and a blatant show of disrespect for the expertise of faculty at UNC schools.”

“Demanding that American history be taught this way, one way, and that diversity, equity and inclusion efforts be eliminated or dropped—these are two pieces to the same puzzle,” he said. “It’s a culture war that’s being waged, and universities are, unfortunately, caught up in the middle of it.”

Smith, who is also president of the North Carolina Conference of the American Association of University Professors, was the co-author of a letter that has now been signed by nearly 700 Chapel Hill faculty and of another letter on his AAUP chapter’s behalf.

The Biden Administration’s Vacuum of Leadership
  • The vacuum of leadership can also now be seen in Sudan conflict. The Biden administration has reportedly abandoned 16,000 US citizens in the country, who were left there to make “life or death decisions”.
  • “[Y]ou had President Xi in Moscow with Putin earlier this week, you have a China negotiating relations and some sort of normalization between Saudi Arabia and Iran is all evidence of a vacuum that’s been created… It’s a vacuum of American leadership. It’s one of the reasons why we need strong bold leader, we’re the leader of the free world. And if America is not leading in the free world, the free world is not being led.” – Former Vice President Mike Pence, interview with radio host John Catsimatidis on WABC 770 AM, March 23, 2023.
  • The ruling mullahs of Iran have also become a major exporter of weapons to Russia – and are not limiting themselves to exporting just drones.
  • The vacuum that the Biden administration has left across the world as well as a result of its failure to lead is not only effectively handing the US over to China, Russia and Iran; it is also apparently viewed by these rogue states as a green light to act in whatever malign way they want.

Supreme Court Justices Form United Front Against Dem Threats
That’s the long game.

The Left tends to view the legitimacy of an institution purely in terms of its current ideological character.

The Supreme Court was sacrosanct when it was leftist, it’s the enemy of all that is good and pure now that it has a conservative majority. When the Senate was conservative, then it was a figment of slavery. Now it’s the bulwark of democracy.

What’s the degree of commitment to a purely transactional view of political norms and institutional legitimacy among lefties? That’s where the difference between the long game and the immediate gains radicals arises. The former want to work through the system while the latter seek to seize power right now by any means.

A good example is the ACLU which used free speech as a ploy to empower the Left until, as one of its founders warned, the time would come when the Left was so powerful that it could safely discard free speech.
